Type: Submarine Tender
Construction: United States
Commissioned: 1914
Service with: United States Navy
The USS Fulton (AS-1) was the very first purpose-built submarine tender of the US Navy.
A submarine tender is a support ship that provides logistical support, maintenance, and supplies to submarines, especially important in the early years of the submarine fleet.
The Fulton was named after Robert Fulton, the American inventor and pioneer in steamships.
Displacement: Approximately 5,100 tons (full load)
Length: Approximately 100 metres
Machinery: Steam turbines
Armament: Small guns for self-defence, often later expanded
Function: Repairs and maintenance for submarines, resupply, medical facilities, and command post
The USS Fulton served as a mobile support ship for the American submarine fleet, allowing submarines to remain at sea longer without returning to port.
Throughout her career, she supported multiple submarines, especially during the First World War and the interwar period.
She was essential in expanding the operational range and effectiveness of American submarines.
Later in her service period, she was modernised and adapted to changing operational requirements.
The USS Fulton was the first ship specifically designed as a tender for submarines — a new concept in the early 20th century.
Her design and success laid the foundation for later, larger, and more advanced submarine tenders in the US Navy.
