In 1949, model sailing was primarily a craft hobby. Many model sailing yachts were then built by hand from wood, often scale models of well-known sailing yachts. Radio control was not yet widespread; these boats were often simply 'sailed' with the wind and current in ponds or lakes.

Control: No or simple mechanical control; radio control systems appeared later.
