The herring boats of the Frisian Wadden Coast are an important part of regional fishing history, particularly in the former municipality of Barradeel, including the hamlet of Koehool. These boats were used for traditional line fishing, where herring was caught using fyke nets placed in long rows, known as lines, in the sea. The fishing communities were organised into so-called "lines", with each fisherman fishing a demarcated area along the sea dike. The catches were jointly distributed, which strengthened the community.

Characteristics of the herring boats

The herring boats were flat-bottomed vessels with straight sloping stems, related to the Frisian punter. They were clinker-built with three planks in the freeboard and were propelled by rowing or with an outboard motor. The usual length was approximately 7.10 metres.

Cultural Heritage

The last original herring boat from old Barradeel, built by Dirk Bouma and Hein Kooistra, is preserved in the Yeb Hettinga Museum in Koehool. This boat is an important cultural heritage and symbolises the rich fishing history of the region .
