The MS Rijn was a Dutch steam cargo ship built in 1916 by the A. Vuyk & Zonen shipyard in Capelle aan den IJssel. The ship was 85.75 metres long, 12.27 metres wide and had a draught of 5.82 metres. Its gross tonnage was 1,986 tonnes, its net tonnage 1,140 tonnes and its deadweight 3,250 tonnes. The ship was fitted with a three-cylinder steam engine producing 1,100 ipk and had a speed of 9 knots. Its call sign was PHFQ.
On 14 May 1940, the Rijn was requisitioned in Rotterdam by the German occupiers and deployed for transport duties in the Baltic Sea. On 11 September 1944, the ship was scuttled by its own crew in the Finnish port of Åbo (now Turku) to prevent it from falling into German hands. In 1946, the wreck was raised and, on 10 January 1947, towed to Rotterdam by the tugboat Hudson. The ship was repaired at the H. de Hoog shipyard in Rotterdam, where, among other things, a new enclosed bridge superstructure was fitted . On 3 September 1947, the Rijn was recommissioned.
In January 1952, the ship was sold to the German shipping company Egon Oldendorff and renamed Erna Oldendorff. It continued to sail under the German flag until it was sold for scrapping in Monfalcone, Italy, in January 1962.
The Rijn had a sister ship, the Vecht, which was built in 1918 by the same shipyard for N.V. Houtvaart. Both ships were steam cargo vessels of similar dimensions and specifications.
