In 1963, the ‘Koningin Juliana’ entered service as a permanent lifeboat at the Hoek van Holland rescue station. The ship undertook 687 rescue missions, saving over 950 people. Lifeboats of the 'Koningin Juliana' type reach a speed of 20 kilometres per hour and were replaced from the 1980s onwards by faster lifeboats capable of reaching speeds of over 55 kilometres per hour. The current crew of the 'Koningin Juliana' consists of volunteers from Hoek van Holland. Men who, over the past decades, have more than earned their stripes during numerous rescue operations.
