The USS Mitscher was originally based on the class that was later named the Mitscher‑class (Destroyer Leader / DL).

Original designation: DD‑927. Later reclassified as DL‑2 on 2 February 1951.

Keel laid: 3 October 1949. Launched: 26 January 1952. Commissioned: 15 May 1953.

Later converted to guided-missile destroyer: DDG‑35, recommissioned 29 June 1968, decommissioned: 1 June 1978, scrapped in 1980.

 

Specifications (original Mitscher‑class)

Displacement: approx. 3,645 tonnes standard, ~4,855 tonnes full load.

Length: approximately 490.5 ft (~149.5 m).

Width: ~14.5 m.

Draught: ~4.50 m.

Propulsion: steam turbines, large boiler plant. (The Mitscher‑class notably introduced the 1200 lb steam boiler plant).

Speed: approximately 30+ knots.
