The Eastport pinky is a traditional fishing boat originating from the Eastport area in Maine, USA. This type of boat is part of the larger group of New England schooners and is known for its distinctive shape and the unique way it was used for fishing and coastal trade in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Design and Features:

The Eastport pinky is a symmetrical boat, meaning both the bow and stern are symmetrical, which provides excellent manoeuvrability and stability. This characteristic was particularly useful in shallow waters and in areas with strong tidal currents. The boat has a sharp bow, a wide hull (which provided stability), and a flat bottom, making it well-suited for coastal navigation.

One of the main features of the Eastport pinky was its rigging. It usually had a gaff rig (a type of sail rig), and the hull was often built with oak wood and other hardwoods for durability and strength. The boats were equipped with sails for propulsion, but could also be rowed if necessary. They were primarily used for fishing, often for lobster pots or bottom fishing such as cod.

Historical Use:

In the 19th century, the Eastport pinky was widely used by fishermen in the waters of Maine and along the Atlantic coast. It was well-suited for inshore fishing, such as catching lobsters, and for transporting goods between islands and the mainland. The pinky was particularly effective for navigating the rocky coasts of Maine, and its design was ideal for withstanding storms in these sometimes treacherous waters.

Heritage:

Although the Eastport pinky gradually fell out of use as larger and more modern boats took over commercial fishing, it remains an important part of Maine's maritime heritage. Today, some examples of Eastport pinkies are preserved as historic vessels or are used for recreational sailing. They also serve as a reminder of the rich fishing history and shipbuilding tradition in New England.
