Antarctic Operations (1959–1961)

The Magga Dan was one of the so-called ‘Dan ships’ that regularly travelled to Antarctica between 1953 and 1987 to supply Australian research stations and support scientific expeditions. During its voyages in 1959–1960, the ship explored the entire coastline of the Australian Antarctic Territory, combining land expeditions with dog sleds and aerial reconnaissance by aircraft. This was the first time helicopters were deployed by ANARE in Antarctica, which was a significant step forward in the programme’s logistical capabilities.

In 1961, Nel Law, the wife of ANARE’s director, Phillip Law, became the first woman to visit Antarctica with ANARE, travelling aboard the Magga Dan.

Later History and Destinations

After her active service, the Magga Dan was converted into a whaling vessel in 1970 under the name S. Nicolau. In 1976, the ship was renamed Calulo, and in 1981, Bouvet. The ship was scrapped in Ghent, Belgium, in 1984.
