The Katwijk bomschuit is an iconic seagoing vessel that played a crucial role in the fishing history of Katwijk aan Zee. This simple, open vessel with a flat bottom was ideal for beaching on the sandy shore, which was essential for coastal villages that had no harbours.
Characteristics of the bomschuit:
Construction and Shape: The bomschuit had a robust construction with a flat bottom, which made it easy to come ashore and depart again.
Sails and Steering: Originally equipped with one mast and a bowsprit, bomschuits were not particularly fast sailors. They were more suited to drifting with the currents of the North Sea.
History and Development:
18th Century: During this period, fishermen from the Dutch coastal villages, including Katwijk, expanded their activities to herring fishing. In 1717, eight Zijdenaars, seven of whom were from Katwijk, departed for the English east coast to catch herring. Initially, the herring was landed ungutted and salted, known as 'steurharing'. Later, gutted herring, or 'pekelharing', was also caught, leading to competition with other herring fishermen.
19th Century: The Katwijk bomschuit fleet grew significantly. In 1857, 35 bomschuits departed for herring fishing, which grew to 55 in the early '80s. Around 1900, the fleet was larger than ever with 74 vessels.
Cultural Significance:
The bomschuit symbolises Katwijk's rich fishing tradition. A model of a bomschuit that fished for shrimp can be seen on Vuurbaakplein (during the summer season), offering visitors an insight into local history.
Additionally, there are plans for an authentic full-size replica of a traditional bomschuit, which is intended to serve as cultural heritage and a tourist attraction.
