A Maaskotter is a type of traditional fishing boat primarily used in the region around the River Meuse (Maas), especially in the southwest of the Netherlands. The Maaskotter has a robust, round hull and is designed to navigate well in the riverine waters and the Zeeland delta, where currents can often be strong.
Historically, the Maaskotter was used for fishing, particularly for catching fish species such as eel and herring. The Maaskotter had a large sail, which allowed it to move quickly across the waters with the wind, and was often used for transporting goods along rivers and coasts.
Nowadays, the Maaskotter is sometimes still used for recreation and is valued for its historical significance and characteristic appearance. Many Maaskotters have been restored and are used for tourist boat trips or as flat-bottomed boats for events and exhibitions.
