In ancient Egypt, passenger ships were essential for transport and rituals along the Nile. These vessels ranged from simple craft to impressive royal ships.

Types of Egyptian Passenger Ships

1. Dahabeah

A traditional wooden sailing boat with a flat bottom, ideal for the shallow Nile. Dahabeahs were used for both passenger and cargo transport. They are still popular for luxury river cruises, with vessels capable of accommodating up to 12 cabins.

2. Thalamegos

A type of luxury ship from the Hellenistic period, often described as a "floating palace". These ships were used for royal journeys and ceremonial purposes. The most famous was a two-hulled catamaran built for King Ptolemy IV Philopator around 200 BC.

3. Khufu Ship

An intact "solar boat" from approximately 2500 BC, discovered near the Great Pyramid of Giza. This ship was likely used for rituals accompanying the pharaoh to the afterlife. It is one of the oldest and best-preserved vessels from antiquity.

4. Dahshur Boats

A group of five or six small ships discovered near the tomb complex of Pharaoh Senusret III. These ships, each approximately 10 metres long, were likely used for rituals or as grave goods. They are remarkably well-preserved and exhibit advanced construction techniques.

5. Beni Hasan Funerary Ship

A wooden model boat from the 12th Dynasty, found in the tomb of Keka and Hetep-bu in Beni Hasan. The model shows a vessel with rowers and a mast, indicating daily use for transport on the Nile.
