The Mayang-Tzi is a type of traditional Chinese river junk that was mainly used on the Yangtze River. This type of vessel is a continuation of the centuries-old Chinese shipping tradition and played a crucial role in the inland transport of goods and people in China.

Features of the Mayang-Tzi

Type: Flat-bottomed vessel, ideal for shallow waters such as the Yangtze River.

Length: Varies, but often between 10 and 20 metres.

Width: Wide enough to provide stability when loading and unloading goods.

Hull material: Traditionally built from wood, with a sturdy, rectangular hull.

Propulsion: Fitted with a single-bladed paddle (yuloh) at the stern, which was used to propel the vessel.

Use: Used for transporting goods such as grain, salt and other merchandise along the river.

Role in the Yangtze River

The Yangtze, with a length of 6,300 km, is the longest river in Asia and one of the most important waterways in China. The river flows through a wide range of ecosystems and is of great importance to the country’s economy and culture. Traditional vessels such as the Mayang-Tzi were essential for inland transport and played a crucial role in trade and daily life along the river.

Present and heritage

Although the traditional Mayang-Tzi have now largely been replaced by motorised vessels, they remain an important symbol of China’s rich maritime history. Replicas and restored examples are sometimes used for tourist cruises, thereby honouring the ancient shipping traditions.Specifications:
