The Swedish submarine hunter HSwMS Stockholm (J6), built in 1937, underwent a major refit in the early 1950s to improve its operational capabilities. This refit was part of a wider modernisation programme for the Göteborg class, to which Stockholm belonged.

 

Modernisation of HSwMS Stockholm (J6)

Between 1950 and 1951, Stockholm underwent an extensive refit, similar to that of other ships in the Göteborg class, such as HSwMS Gävle (J9) and HSwMS Karlskrona (J8). Key changes included:

Increase in beam: The ship’s beam was increased by 70 cm, which improved stability.

Relocation of the central gun: The central 12 cm gun was moved aft to a superfiring position, which increased the range of fire.

Replacement of anti-aircraft weapons: The older 25 mm m/32 anti-aircraft guns were replaced by four single Bofors 40 mm m/36 guns, later upgraded to m/48A.

Installation of radar and improved fire control system: The bridge was enlarged and fitted with a radar installation on a new mast, replacing the old pole mast.

These modifications made Stockholm better suited to the changing maritime threats of the Cold War.

 

Operational career after the refit

Following the refit, Stockholm remained in active servicewith the Swedish Navy. In 1961, the ship, along with other vessels of the Göteborg class, was reclassified as a frigate. In 1964, Stockholm was decommissioned and sold for scrapping in Ystad.

 

Comparison with other ships of the Göteborg class

Other ships in the Göteborg class, such as HSwMS Gävle (J9) and HSwMS Karlskrona (J8), underwent similar refits. These modernisations were aimed at improving the ships’ firepower, stability and detection capabilities. Following the refits, these ships were reclassified as frigates and remained in service until 1965 and 1974 respectively
