A pedal boat or paddle boat is a vessel with a propulsion system as used on bicycles applied. With this construction, one can move across the water by pedalling. Propulsion is usually achieved with a paddle wheel, because that construction is simple. Propulsion with a propeller is also possible, which is more efficient. However, the propeller construction is more complex and vulnerable, which is why it is not generally used. The use of the pedal boat is mainly recreational, so the inefficiency of the paddle wheel as propulsion is not a problem. The pedal crank is connected to the shaft of the paddle wheel. The paddles push water backwards, causing the boat to experience a forward-directed reaction force from the water, resulting in forward movement.
The first paddle boats were manufactured in China during the Han Dynasty. The world record for fast pedal boats is over 35 km/h. The marine propeller has been replaced by an air propeller and the floats are equipped with a hydrofoil construction.
