The Berkelzomp is a replica of the traditional flat-bottomed boat that was used for centuries for inland navigation on the river Berkel, from Vreden in Germany to Zutphen. In 1987, the De Berkelzomp Foundation was established with the aim of reviving the old Berkel navigation. Thanks to the efforts of volunteers and financial support, the first zomp, the "Jappe", was launched in Borculo in 1989. Since then, zompen have been added in Eibergen, Lochem and Almen, allowing visitors to experience the river landscape as it was centuries ago .
The Berkelzompen sail from April to October at four locations along the river:
Borculo: The "Jappe" sails from April to November and can be found in the Zompenloze at Graaf Wichmanstraat 48a. In 2024, the "Thomas Lijferingbrug" was opened, extending the sailing area to the centre of Borculo .
Eibergen: The "Snippe" is available daily for boat trips. In Eibergen and Borculo, disabled passengers have the option of using a hoist .
Lochem: The "Ente" sails from April to October. In addition to regular trips, there are also special Moonlight cruises in August, where the zomp is atmospherically lit as the sun sets .
Almen: The "Fute" is available from April until the end of September. Trips can be booked via Museum STAAL or De Berkel swimming pool .
The trips usually last 1 to 1.5 hours and offer a unique experience of the landscape, with stories from the skippers about the history and nature along the Berkel.
The Berkelzomp is a living piece of heritage that reflects the rich past of the region. The initiative to bring the zompen back into service emphasises the importance of preserving local traditions and sharing history with a wide audience. The zompen are not only vessels, but also carriers of stories, culture and connection with nature.
