The Kaag from 1779 is a historic Dutch ship that originates from the kaag, a type of flat-bottomed vessel that was already used for inland navigation in the 16th century. The kaag was particularly suitable for the shallow and changeable waters of the Zuiderzee, thanks to its shallow draught and its ability to dry out.
Length: Approximately 13.30 metres (47 Amsterdam feet).
Width: Approximately 3.40 metres (12 Amsterdam feet).
Depth (draught): Approximately 1.64 metres (4 feet and 2 inches).
Rigging: Equipped with a sprit sail, which allowed the ship to sail obliquely against the wind.
Hull material: Usually built of wood, with a flat bottom and straight stems.
Use: Used for the transport of goods and passengers across the Zuiderzee and along the Wadden Islands.
The kaag from 1779 represents a period when traditional shipping on the Zuiderzee flourished. These ships were essential for the transport of goods such as salt, peat, and fish, and played a crucial role in the region's economy. With the advent of steamships and the construction of the Noordhollands Kanaal in 1824, the kaag lost its dominant position in inland navigation.
Today, there are still a few replicas of the kaag in circulation, serving as a tribute to this iconic ship type. They are used for educational purposes and tourist boat trips, keeping the rich maritime history of the Netherlands alive.
