Support for fleet formations in the Atlantic and Caribbean

Later, mainly used as a training ship


 

Modernisation

During the 1950s, some modifications to armament and sensors

No full modernisation as with some other ships (such as the Holland or Friesland classes)


 

Final years and decommissioning

Decommissioned: 1962

Sold for scrap: 1962–1963


 

Historical significance

The Piet Hein (D805) was named after the famous Dutch naval hero Piet Hein (1577–1629)

She was one of four British Battle-class destroyers transferred to the Netherlands shortly after the Second World War

They provided an important temporary boost to the reconstruction of the Dutch navy
