About the Kameleon:

Klinkhamer's smithy, with the house next to it, stood on the road that ran from the village to a large lake. Behind the smithy was a small patch of grass, and then came the canal. This canal ran parallel to the road, behind the houses, so that wealthy people, such as the doctor or the notary, could step into their car in front of the house and into a sailing or motorboat behind the house.

Klinkhamer didn't have a car, the smith couldn't afford one, but he did have a boat. That is to say, Hielke and Sietse had received one from him. And what a boat! It was a clumsy iron tub, with equally blunt bow and stern, while the whole thing was painted so brightly that it was hard to guess what colour the boat was. That's why the boys called her "the Kameleon", because that's a lizard that constantly changes colour.

Most people laughed at that clumsy little boat, but Hielke and Sietse were extremely proud of it, because the Kameleon had a powerful engine and could sail incredibly fast. Klinkhamer had built a protective cover over the engine and everything else was just like in a car. The steering wheel, the gears, the starter and even the horn were all there. The boys had dug a small harbour at the back of the field and then built a boathouse over it.

The Kameleon was safely stored inside. As soon as Hielke and Sietse had even a moment, they would be in their boat, either cleaning the engine extra thoroughly or going for a sail on the lake.
