Fokker F.XX

Source: www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fokker_F.XX

The Fokker F.XX is an aircraft from the Fokker family that was built in the Netherlands in the 1930s.

The F.XX is a three-engine high-wing aircraft. The aircraft was designed as a passenger plane and, in that capacity, could carry a maximum of twelve passengers. The F.XX was built by Fokker on behalf of KLM, which wanted an aircraft for its route to the Dutch East Indies that flew approximately 50 km/h faster than the Fokker F.XVIII. With faster aircraft, KLM wanted to prove that it was pointless to deploy special mail planes to the Indies. The design of the F.XX was an improvement on the F.XVIII, with the aircraft being one of the few pre-war Fokkers to feature a retractable landing gear.

Only one F.XX was built, the ‘Zilvermeeuw’ (PH-AIZ). In an attempt to deliver the post to the Dutch East Indies in record time, the new aircraft was due to fly to Batavia on 18 December 1933. However, the centre engine failed on take-off. Repairs would have taken too long, so the F.XVIII “Pelikaan” was hastily prepared for departure to Batavia; although 50 km/h slower, it still managed to complete the journey within the “Zilvermeeuw”’s schedule.
