Hr.Ms. Zeehond was a Dutch police vessel for North Sea fisheries, built in 1892. The ship served under the flag of the Royal Netherlands Navy and was deployed for supervision of fishing in the North Sea, primarily aimed at enforcing fishing laws and protecting Dutch interests at sea.

Characteristics of Hr.Ms. Zeehond:

Name: Hr.Ms. Zeehond

Type: Police vessel (also known as fisheries inspection vessel)

Service: North Sea Fisheries Police

Commissioned: 1892

Function: Fisheries supervision, control of fishing vessels, enforcement of regulations, and sometimes rescue operations

Background:

In the second half of the 19th century, Dutch sea fishing grew rapidly, especially for herring, cod, and plaice. At the same time, the need for supervision and protection of the fishing fleet also increased. For this reason, special vessels such as the Zeehond were built or purchased by the state and placed under the command of the navy.

Particulars:

Although little visual material or extensive technical specifications about the Zeehond are publicly available, it is known that these ships were relatively small, manoeuvrable, and suitable for staying at sea for extended periods. They had a military crew and were equipped with communication means to stay in contact with the shore and other vessels.

Fate:

It is unclear exactly when the Zeehond was decommissioned, but many of these late 19th-century vessels were replaced by more modern inspection vessels in the first decades of the 20th century.
