Here is an overview of the Van Speijk-class frigates (1967), an important class of frigates in the Royal Netherlands Navy:

Van Speijk class (1967)

Type: Frigates
Number: 6 ships
Service: Royal Netherlands Navy
Commissioned: First ship in 1967

Background

The Van Speijk class was a class of multi-role frigates, derived from the British Leander class.

They were designed to perform multiple tasks: anti-submarine warfare (ASW), air defence and patrols.

These frigates replaced older vessels and formed the Netherlands’ modern maritime combat force during the Cold War.

Hr.Ms. Van Galen (F829)

Hr.Ms. Van Nes (F830)

HNLMS Van Amstel (F831)

HNLMS Van Zijll (F832)

HNLMS Van Ewijck (F833)

Technical specifications

Displacement: Around 2,200 tonnes (standard)

Length: Approximately 113 metres

Speed: Approximately 28 knots

Crew: Approximately 200–220

Armament:

Oerlikon 76 mm gun (bow)

Torpedo tubes for anti-submarine torpedoes

Anti-submarine helicopter (added later on some ships)

Anti-aircraft guns and missiles (later modernisations)

Role and operations

The Van Speijk-class frigates were deployed for escort duties, maritime patrols, and international exercises within the NATO framework.

They specialised in detecting and combating submarines, but also played a secondary role in air defence and surface warfare.

Over the years, they were modernised to meet new technological requirements.

The ships were eventually replaced in the 1990s and 2000s by the more modern Karel Doorman-class frigates.

Interesting

The class was named after Jan van Speijk, a 19th-century Dutch naval hero who became famous for his courageous self-sacrifice during the Belgian Revolution.

The design was based on the successful British Leander-class design, which ensured reliable performance and good operational capability.
