Keel laid on 16 September 1933 at Wilton‑Fijenoord in Schiedam; launched 11 March 1935; commissioned 3 October 1936

Designed as a light cruiser (officially ‘flotilla leader’) in difficult times — budget cuts and pacifism dictated the choice for lighter armament and armour

Equipped with centerline turrets: three twin Mk 9 (15 cm) and one single Mk 10 turret, total 7×150 mm
