Fokker F.XX

Source : www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fokker_F.XX

The Fokker F.XX is an aircraft from the Fokker family that was built in the Netherlands in the 1930s.

The F.XX is a three-engined high-wing aircraft. The machine was designed as a passenger aircraft and could, in that capacity, carry a maximum of twelve passengers. The F.XX was built by Fokker on behalf of KLM, who wanted an aircraft for the route to the Dutch East Indies that flew approximately 50 km/h faster than the Fokker F.XVIII. With faster aircraft, KLM wanted to prove that it was pointless to deploy special mail planes to the East Indies. The design of the F.XX was an improvement on the F.XVIII, with the aircraft being one of the few pre-war Fokkers to feature a retractable landing gear.

Only one F.XX was built, the "Zilvermeeuw" (PH-AIZ). In an attempt to deliver mail to the East Indies in record time, the new aircraft was scheduled to fly to Batavia on 18 December 1933. However, the central engine stopped during take-off. Repairs took too much time, and so the F.XVIII "Pelikaan" was hastily prepared for departure to Batavia, which – although 50 km/h slower – still managed to complete the journey according to the "Zilvermeeuw"'s schedule.
