The Fokker C-X was a two-seater reconnaissance aircraft and light bomber powered by a 608 hp Rolls-Royce Kestrel V engine. It was initially designed for the Military Aviation branch of the Royal Dutch East Indies Army. The first prototype flew on 9 October 1934 and the Dutch East Indies ordered 13 examples. However, the Aviation Department in the Netherlands also took an interest; the C-5s from 1925, which were used for reconnaissance purposes, were severely outdated and urgently needed replacing. In 1934, the Aviation Department therefore placed an initial order for four C-Xs, numbers 700 to 703, later followed by an order for 16 aircraft, numbers 704 to 719. The first batch of aircraft was delivered in 1935, the second batch a year later. The cost of a C-X in 1935 was approximately 30,000 guilders.
In addition to the Netherlands, Spain and Finland also showed interest in the C-X. The Spanish Republic secretly purchased one example fitted with an 850 hp. Hispano-Suiza engine and equipped with a 20 mm cannon. The intention was to start building the C-X under licence. In 1937, Finland ordered four C-Xs equipped with a Bristol Pegasus radial engine. Between 1938 and 1942, the Finns built 35 C-Xs under licence, which were successfully deployed as reconnaissance and (dive) bombers during the war with the Russians (1939–1940 and 1941–1944). The last Finnish C-X was lost in an accident in 1958.
The C-X had one forward machine gun that fired through the propeller cowling and one rear machine gun. Bomb racks were mounted beneath the left and right lower wings, enabling the aircraft to carry eight 50 kg bombs, sixteen 25 kg bombs or four 100 kg bombs.
Unfortunately, by the time it entered service in 1936, the C-X was no longer suitable for its intended purpose. In neighbouring countries, fast twin-engine aircraft were already being used for strategic reconnaissance. In our country, however, we were not yet at that stage. Such aircraft had indeed been ordered from Germany in 1940, but they were never delivered.
During the days of May 1940, C-Xs carried out missions on several occasions in the vicinity of the Grebbeberg, such as the bombing of German positions.
