De Waakzaamheid was a unique lake 'boeier', a type of wooden sailing ship designed in the early 19th century for the Rijnland District Water Board. The ship was built to carry out inspections on the Haarlemmermeer and was known for its robustness, durability, and comfortable interior.
In 1832, the Rijnland board asked the Frisian ship designer Folkert Nicolaas van Loon to design a new ship. The result was a pavilion yacht with a length of approximately 12.2 metres, a width of 4 metres, and a draught of 1.7 metres. The interior was luxuriously appointed, including mahogany furniture, a mirror, a mantelpiece, a private toilet, and sleeping berths for four people. Construction was carried out by Eeltje Teadzes Holtrop from IJlst, under the supervision of Van Loon. The ship was launched in April 1833 and was named "De Waakzaamheid".
The ship served Rijnland for 16 years, but after the draining of the Haarlemmermeer, it lost its function. On 30 April 1849, it was decided to sell De Waakzaamheid. The ship was sailed to Amsterdam and exhibited there for eight days in the Singel canal. On 4 June 1849, it was sold for 1,043.28 guilders (approximately 12,500 euros).
After the sale, the history of De Waakzaamheid is somewhat unclear. In 1932, the ship, by then known as "Wester", was sold to Japan, where it was renamed "Lioe Goe Maroe". The ship was shipped to Kobe, where it was converted and continued to be used.
Although the original ship has disappeared, De Waakzaamheid remains an important part of Rijnland's heritage. In 1978, a scale model of the ship was presented to dike reeve J. Baron van Knobelsdorf on the occasion of Rijnland's 400th anniversary. Additionally, the ship is featured in the book "De Boeier" by Dr. Ir. J. Vermeer.
