An Admiralty yacht from the 18th century was a special type of sailing ship used by the Dutch Admiralties. These ships served as vessels for high-ranking officials, such as admirals, governors, and other senior functionaries. They were a type of official vessel with a representative and practical function.
Purpose: Primarily to transport important persons within the admiralty areas. They were often luxury yachts for their time, offering space and comfort.
Use: Besides transport, they also served as official ships for inspections, ceremonies, and representation.
Built: These ships were built in the 17th and 18th centuries at various Dutch shipyards.
Design: Usually featuring an elegant and graceful construction style, with a flat-bottomed or round-bilge hull, allowing them to navigate shallow inland waters and rivers.
Length: Often between 15 and 30 metres.
Armament: Usually lightly armed or unarmed, as it was not a warship.
Finish: Ornate with extensive wood carvings and often painted.
Sails: Two or three masts with a sail configuration suitable for fast and smooth sailing.
Interior: Luxuriously finished for its time, with comfortable cabins.
The Dutch Admiralties (such as those of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Zeeland, Friesland, and the Admiralty of the Maze) were responsible for the navy and the supervision of inland waterways. Their yachts were a symbol of power and prestige.
A well-known example of a similar ship is the States' Yacht, used for transporting members of the States General. These yachts were often very richly decorated.
Today, several replicas of Admiralty yachts have been built, such as the States' Yacht De Utrecht, a faithful reconstruction of an 18th-century admiral's yacht, built with authentic materials and techniques. These replicas are used for education, events, and tourism.
