The "Zeeman" catamaran from 1992 is a striking sailing ship that became particularly well-known for the circumnavigation undertaken by Dutch ocean sailor Henk de Velde.
Design: The catamaran was designed by German architect Bernd Köhler.
Construction: Built by Rhebergen-Muttihull Yachts on the former NDSM site in Amsterdam.
Dimensions: Length of approximately 18 metres.
Material: Aluminium hull with a composite superstructure.
Characteristic: Bright yellow colour and a striking design.
In 1992, Henk de Velde departed with the "Zeeman" from Brest, France, with the aim of sailing solo around the world in 100 days. This attempt was intended to break the world record. However, the journey was not a success; de Velde returned to Brest after 158 days. Nevertheless, his journey was praised for its determination and adventure.
After the circumnavigation, the "Zeeman" catamaran was renovated and extended to a length of 21 metres. The ship was renamed C1000 and was used for further sailing trips. In 2015, the shipyard Zeeman Jachtbouw was renamed VMG Yachtbuilders, but the brand Zeeman Yachts continues to exist and still delivers yachts with classic lines and modern sailing characteristics.
