The 16 m² class sailing boat is a traditional Dutch sailing boat class, very well-known and popular in recreational sailing.

What is the 16 m² class?

“16 m²” refers to the sail area of approximately 16 square metres.

It is a relatively light and narrow open keelboat.

Often used for racing, but also recreationally.

The boat usually has a keel (as opposed to a centreboard dinghy) and one large sail or sometimes a jib and mainsail.

The boat is designed to be easy to sail, but does require some skill due to its narrow hull and relatively large sail area.

History

The 16 m² class is particularly popular in the Netherlands and Germany.

Boats in this class have been built for over 100 years.

It is one of the oldest sailing classes still active in the Netherlands.

Who is it suitable for?

Sailors who enjoy racing a classic keelboat.

People who appreciate traditional sailing and the maintenance of wooden boats.
