Service history

Launch date: 8 June 1940 in Le Havre

Commissioned: 1 April 1949

Decommissioned: 1961

Fate: Scrapped in 1963

La Créole was evacuated to Great Britain whilst still under construction during the Second World War to prevent it from being captured by the Germans. After the war, the ship was completed and entered service with the French Navy in 1949.

Operational deployment

Suez Crisis (1956): La Créole took part in French operations in the Mediterranean during the Suez Crisis. During this mission, it was accidentally attacked by French aircraft from the aircraft carrier Arromanches, sustaining damage to its mast and antennas.

Incident with the Sidi Ferruch (1962): On 28 March 1962, during a training cruise, La Créole surfaced near the French passenger ship Sidi Ferruch, which was bringing 800 French soldiers back from Algeria. The two ships collided, causing serious damage to La Créole’s sail. The ship returned to Toulon under its own power, but the damage was too severe to repair, leading to the ship being decommissioned.
