At the outbreak of the Second World War, the O 24 was not yet fully completed.
Together with HNLMS O 21, it managed to escape to England via the port of Vlissingen on 13 May 1940 to prevent the Germans from seizing the vessel.
It was completed at a British shipyard (Thornycroft, Southampton) and commissioned into the Royal Navy on 10 July 1940 under the Dutch flag.
O 24 was active in numerous areas:
