Key Events

Deployment in the Dutch East Indies

First voyage: departed from Den Helder in November 1910 via the Cape of Good Hope, arriving in Surabaya in February 1911

Service from 1911–1918 and again from 1921–1930 in the East

Incident off Sumatra (1912)

In January 1912, the ship ran aground on a reef off Sumatra; ammunition and coal were unloaded, after which it was repaired in Singapore

Mutiny of 1933

On 5 February 1933, a mutiny broke out due to poor working conditions and social inequality

The mutiny led to political unrest and strengthened right-wing movements in the Netherlands

Later Service & Name Change

Decommissioned in July 1933; subsequently converted into a training ship

Renamed Soerabaja in 1936


 

Second World War & Demolition

Sunk

Bombed by Japanese aircraft in Surabaya on 18 February 1942 and scuttled

Salvaged by the Japanese and used as a floating battery

Bombed again in 1943 and sunk for good
