The St. Abbs is an ocean-going rescue tug of the "Saint-class rescue tug" that was built for the Admiralty (Royal Navy) during/after the First World War.

Builder: Ferguson Brothers (Port Glasgow) Ltd, yard no. 242, Port Glasgow.

Date launched: 17 December 1918. Commissioned (registered) 5 March 1919.

Pennant number: W 02.

 

Technical specifications

Displacement: approx. 465 grt, 860 tons displacement.

Dimensions: length approximately 135.4 ft (≈ 41.3 m), beam approx. 29.1 ft (≈ 8.9 m), draught approx. 13.7 ft (≈ 4.2 m).

Propulsion: 1 propeller, three-cylinder triple-expansion (TE) steam engine, nominal 116 nhp / approx. 1,200 ihp, speed approximately 12 knots.

Armament (design): one 12-pounder gun.

 

Service & fate

The St. Abbs was initially deployed as a rescue tug and later also as a fleet tug and target towing vessel.

Location: registered in 1934 as based in Portsmouth.

Loss: sunk by German bombing near Dunkirk on 1 June 1940, coordinates approximately 51° 05′ N, 2° 27′ E

 

Remarks

The Saint-class was developed because the Royal Navy needed stronger ocean-going rescue tugs during the First World War.

Although the St. Abbs was built in 1918/19, she still served in the Second World War and tragically lost many crew members in the 1940 bombing.
