HMS Wellington was a British Grimsby-class sloop, built in 1934 at Devonport Dockyard.
Originally deployed in Pacific waters, but during the Second World War, she served as a convoy escort in the Atlantic Ocean.
Since 1948, she has been permanently moored at Victoria Embankment, London, as the headquarters of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners (HCMM) under the name HQS Wellington. In 2024/2025, the name was officially restored to HMS Wellington (1934).
By shipyard: Devonport, Plymouth. Launched on 29 May 1934.
Length: approximately 81 metres (265.84 ft).
Width: approximately 10.36 metres.
Speed: around 16.5 knots, as typical for the class.
Armament (as built): two 4.7-inch guns + one 3-inch anti-aircraft gun.
Roles: designed as a sloop/escort for colonial and ocean use; adapted during wartime for anti-submarine and escort duties.
Before the war (1935-1939), HMS Wellington patrolled in New Zealand and the western Pacific Ocean, including from Auckland.
From December 1939, she was deployed as a close escort for Atlantic convoys, a crucial task in the Battle of the Atlantic.
She escorted approximately 103 convoys and rescued over 400 crew members from the sea during the war.
After the war, she was decommissioned in 1947 and subsequently acquired by the HCMM in 1948 to become her role as an office/event venue.
