A drilling rig or drilling platform is a platform equipped with facilities for drilling in relatively shallow water for crude oil and/or natural gas. Other structures located at sea are often mistakenly referred to as 'drilling rigs' by the public, but these are often production platforms.
A drilling rig itself is equipped with a derrick on a pontoon. The drilling rig can be floating (usually a semi-submersible) or can be equipped with legs that can be lowered to the seabed, allowing the entire structure to be lifted several tens of metres. In such a case, it is called a jack-up rig (In English, the terms "Self Elevating Platform" are used for all jack-up rigs and "Jack Updrillships or semi-submersible platforms are used, which are held in place either with anchors or by means of dynamic positioning .
Exploration drilling for crude oil or natural gasis carried out from a drilling rig. If recoverable quantities of oil or gas are found, the drilling rig is replaced by a production platform. If the recoverable quantities are not too large, it may also be decided to use a buoy or a special vessel (FPSO) for oil extraction.
If something 'downhole' needs to be done during the lifespan of a production well, a (jack-up) drilling rig can be positioned right next to the production platform. Because the derrick itself is on an extendable platform (Cantilever), it can slide over the production platform, allowing access to the well.
