€0,00

A Norwegian whaleboat is a type of rowing boat originally used for whaling, particularly by the Norwegians. These sloops, also known as whaleboats, are designed for speed, manoeuvrability, and seaworthiness, characteristics that were essential for the dangerous hunting of whales in rough seas.

Characteristics of a Norwegian whaleboat

Double-curved hull: The sloop has a strong curve in its sides, which provides stability and a robust design.

Symmetrical shape: The bow and stern are identical, allowing the sloop to sail both forwards and backwards without turning.

Length and width: The sloop is typically between 7.5 and 10.5 metres long and has a width that is approximately one-fifth of its length.

Sailing and rowing capabilities: They are equipped with a sail and oars, allowing them to be propelled by both sailing and rowing.

Crew: A typical crew consisted of four or more rowers, a helmsman, and a harpooner.

History and use

The Norwegian whaleboat is a direct descendant of the Viking longship and was introduced in the 17th century for whaling, particularly for the Greenland whale. These sloops were often deployed from larger ships to approach and harpoon whales. The hunt was a dangerous undertaking; once a whale was struck, the sloop could be dragged by the animal until it was exhausted, after which the crew killed the animal with lances

Modern applications and replicas

Today, Norwegian whaleboats are still valued for their seaworthiness and are used for historical recreation, rowing, and as museum pieces. An example is the Kromhout Whaler, an eight-man rowing sloop built to an 1882 design. This sloop is still manufactured and used, particularly in the Netherlands, and boasts excellent speed and seaworthiness characteristics .sloeproeien.nl
