The Hr.Ms. M 2, originally known as the tugboat Marie II, was one of four ships converted into minesweepers by the Royal Netherlands Navy in 1918. These ships, originally built as tugboats for a Russian client, were deployed as the first minesweepers of the Royal Netherlands Navy.

The Hr.Ms. M 2 was commissioned as a minesweeper on 3 December 1918. During the Second World War, it was part of the 2nd Minesweeper Division, stationed in IJmuiden. On 13 May 1940, the M 2 struck a magnetic mine near IJmuiden and sank, killing seven crew members. The ship was salvaged and repaired in July 1940. On 17 September 1940, during a storm, the ship collided with the wreck of the blockship Jan Pieterszoon Coen while entering IJmuiden and sank again. It was salvaged again and rebuilt in Amsterdam, during which the ship was lengthened.
On 6 March 1941, the ship was renamed Fairplay X and entered service with the German tugboat company Richard Borchard in Hamburg. After the war, the ship was recovered and recommissioned as the tugboat RS-21 by the Royal Netherlands Navy. On 23 December 1949, the ship sank during a storm near Borkum
