The ship is named after the chairman of the board of Standard Oil, by whom the contract for the construction was concluded. The N.V. Nederlandsche Koloniale Petroleum Maatschappij largely influenced the placement of this order in the Netherlands, thereby providing approximately 200,000 man-days of direct and indirect work in the Netherlands.
The G. S. Walden measures 15,000 tons and was therefore already a splendid order for Dutch shipbuilding. For the Rotterdamsche Droogdok Mij., however, the construction was of even greater importance because it had to be carried out according to the Isherwood "Arch form" system.
This system, which has already been applied to four tankers built in Hamburg, gives the ships a special underwater shape, allowing them to cleave through the water like a fish. Due to the reduced water resistance, it is difficult to increase the speed without additional engine power,
The G. S. Walden, which is a single-screw ship with a 3600 BHP 2-stroke Diesel engine, can therefore develop a speed of 12 1/2 knots.
