When designing the m.s. Frigion, built by N.V. Scheepswerf en Machinefabriek De Biesbosch in Dordrecht, the shipyard, commissioned by the shipowners, sought to create a vessel that would achieve maximum cargo capacity within the 500 GRT limit, without compromising on requirements for habitability, stability, etc. Consequently, the resulting vessel had to make the most of the available space for purposes other than cargo. Nevertheless, the regulations of Lloyd’s and the Swedish Maritime Administration had to be fully complied with.
As a compromise between all these requirements, the Frigion was given the following main characteristics:

length overall : 82 m
length between perpendiculars : 72 m
beam at frame : 11.05 m
depth to main deck : 3.75 m
depth to shelter deck : 6.70 m
deadweight : 815 t (at 1016 kg) at 3.72 m draught
hold capacity of refrigerated holds : 69,889 cft
gross tonnage : 499.46 RT
trial speed : 14 knots

The ship is constructed as a shelter deck vessel, with the engine room and all accommodation aft, and is further divided by watertight bulkheads into fore and aft holds, the engine room, and fore and aft peak compartments. The double bottom is subdivided into tanks for fuel, fresh water and ballast.
The air coolers for the cargo cooling system are housed in two winch houses on the shelter deck.
The auxiliary machinery in the engine room, the compressors and fans of the cooling system, the steering gear pumps and the pumps for the hydraulic system are electrically driven. The electrical power required for this is supplied by three diesel generators, each consisting of a Deutz diesel engine producing 165 hp at 1800 rpm, coupled to a 130 kVA generator.
The mains voltage is 440 V three-phase, 60 Hz. The three main generators can be connected in parallel.
The refrigeration compressor motors are started by means of automatic star-delta switches.

The freezing system is designed to maintain temperatures from +12 °C to -30 °C whilst sailing in tropical waters. This makes the ship suitable for transporting a wide range of cargo, ranging from bananas to frozen products.
The system is based on the two-stage principle with injection intercoolers, controlled by the superheat temperature of the discharge gas. The most suitable refrigerant for these low temperatures was R 22. The machinery, installed on an intermediate deck in the engine room, consists of three two-stage compressors with three cylinders in the first stage and one cylinder in the second stage, with switching options to operate on one stage as required, and on two stages at low temperatures. Each compressor has a capacity of 33,000 kcal/h at an evaporation temperature of -40 ºC. The capacity of the compressors is controlled semi-automatically, with the evaporation temperatures set by suction pressure control valves; when the desired temperature is reached, thermostats close solenoid valves in the liquid line.
The same thermostats activate solenoid valves in the control connection of the suction pressure control valves, so that when the thermostat switches off, the entire circuit on both the injection and suction sides is closed. This prevents condensation from forming in the evaporators. A special provision of this nature was deemed necessary due to the extreme temperature range. The condensers are fitted with aluminium-brass low-fin Integron tubes, allowing a large condenser surface area to be accommodated within a limited space.
The cooling of the four holds is achieved by forced air circulation using finned air coolers, which were designed in two sections per cooler in accordance with the Lloyd’s principle. Coolers and fans are housed in the two deckhouses on the shelter deck.
