Tasks:

Anti-submarine warfare (ASW)

Intelligence gathering

Exercises with NATO units

Simulation of enemy submarines in NATO training exercises

Both ships were known for their low noise profile, making them difficult to detect.

Decommissioning and subsequent fate

Both submarines were decommissioned in the 1990s due to obsolescence and high maintenance costs.

Attempts to sell them to countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia failed.

They were eventually scrapped in the Netherlands.

Details

The Zwaardvis class was based on the design of the American Barbel class, with Dutch modifications.

They formed the transition to the later Walrus-class submarines (1990s), which are still in service.

The vessels were ahead of their time in terms of silent propulsion and hydrodynamic design.
