Overview of the ship H.M.S. De Zeven Provinciën (C 802) — including the original design (1939) and subsequent career.

Design & construction

The design was initiated in 1938–39 as part of the Dutch fleet programme to build new light cruisers to replace older ships.

The keel of this ship was laid on 19 May 1939 at the Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij (RDM) shipyard in Rotterdam.

The ship was initially laid down under the name Kijkduin. Later, due to the war and post-war renamings, it was given the name De Zeven Provinciën.

Construction was interrupted by the German invasion in May 1940; the hull remained in place during the occupation.

After the Second World War, it was decided to modify and modernise the design; the ship was eventually launched on 22 August 1950 and entered service on 17 December 1953.

Career & notable events

The ship served with the Royal Netherlands Navy from 1953 until the mid-1970s.

In 1962–64, the ship was modernised, with the aft turrets being replaced by a guided missile system (such as the RIM-2 Terrier) and a helicopter deck being added.

On 16 October 1975 (or 1976), it was decommissioned and sold to the Peruvian Navy in August 1976, where it was renamed BAP Almirante Aguirre. Defence

The ship was eventually decommissioned in Peru in 1999 and scrapped in 2000.
