The Curaçao was originally built in Great Britain as the steamship Calpe in 1825.
It was purchased by the Dutch government in 1826 and renamed Curaçao.
This ship is historically significant as it was the first steamship of the Royal Netherlands Navy.
Propulsion: Paddle steamer (paddle wheels) driven by a coal-fired steam engine
Power: Approximately 80 nominal horsepower (sources vary)
Armament: Light guns for signalling and defensive purposes (not a front-line warship)
Role: Postal and dispatch service, towing service, and trials with steam propulsion
Crew: Approximately 40–50 men
Used for coastal voyages and for testing steam propulsion within the navy.
Operated between Dutch ports and colonies such as Curaçao and Suriname (hence the name).
Eventually taken out of service when larger and more efficient steamships came into use.
