The vessel was launched on 9 May 1981 at the shipyard of Verolme Verenigde Scheepswerven in Heusden. The vessel is approximately 83.2 metres long, 36.9 metres wide and has a minimum draught of 3 m and a height of 24.7 m. The vessel can accommodate 31 people.

The sheerleg has a lifting capacity of 2,200 tonnes, while a mass of 3,000 tonnes can be lifted to the waterline using the winches on deck.

The Taklift 4 served in the construction of the Oosterscheldekering, where the vessel positioned the steel gates, the traffic tubes, threshold beams and sill beacons. This sheerleg was also deployed during the salvage of the capsized British ferry Herald of Free Enterprise near Zeebrugge.
