The Blériot XI is a propeller-driven aeroplane built by Blériot Aéronautique, a company founded by Louis Blériot. Blériot was also the designer of the aeroplane, which was built in 1908. On 23 January 1909, Blériot made his first flight in the aeroplane at an air show in Paris.

Flight across the English Channel.

In the spring of 1909, the engine was replaced by an Anzani engine. With this version of the aeroplane, he attempted the crossing of the English Channel on 25 July 1909. The flight, from Calais to Dover, was the first successful crossing of the Channel and lasted 36.5 minutes. This flight took place in poor weather conditions, with Blériot having no compass to navigate by. His landing was rather hard, causing the landing gear and propeller to break off, but Blériot remained unharmed. He won £1,000 for the flight, offered as a prize by the Daily Mail newspaper.
