The MS Willem Barendsz II was a Dutch whaling ship that served the Nederlandsche Maatschappij voor de Walvischvaart (NMW) between 1955 and 1964. It was built by the Wilton-Fijenoord shipyard in Schiedam and delivered on 9 July 1955.
Gross tonnage: 23,799 tonnes
Net tonnage: 15,090 tonnes
Dimensions: 195.3 x 27.6 x 13.5 metres
Speed: 14 knots
Engines: Two MAN diesel engines, each with 5,250 hp.
The ship served as a mother ship and factory ship for nine expeditions in the waters around Antarctica. During these expeditions, 27,712 whales were caught, representing 4.4% of the total catch in the post-war years.
In 1964, the NMW decided to cease whaling due to increasing catch restrictions. The ship was sold to Atlantic Harvesters (Pty) Ltd in South Africa and renamed Willem Barendsz. Following refits, the ship was recommissioned in 1967. In 1973, it was sold to Korea Wonyang Fisheries Co. Ltd in Busan, South Korea, and renamed Yu Sin. The vessel underwent further modifications and was deployed for fishmeal production in the Bering Sea. In 1986, it was renamed Ocean Pioneer and remained active in the fishing industry. The vessel was eventually sold for scrap in June 2001.
