After delivery, the Esso Nederland was deployed to transport crude oil from the Middle East to the Esso refinery in the Botlek area near Rotterdam. In 1962, the ship was sold to Standard Tankers (Bahamas) Co., Ltd. and renamed Esso Gothenburg. The ship changed hands and names several times, including Petrola XXIII, Petrola 23, Alexandros and Afroessa. It was eventually scrapped in 1986.
