History and Tragedy

First and only voyage: Departed on 10 April 1912 from Southampton to New York.

Disaster: On 14 April 1912 at approximately 23:40, the Titanic collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean.

Sinking: The ship sank in the early morning of 15 April 1912, approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes after the collision.

Casualties: Of the approximately 2,224 people on board, only about 710 survived.

Aftermath: This disaster is one of the most famous maritime disasters in history and led to stricter safety requirements for passenger ships, such as sufficient lifeboats and improved communication procedures.

RMS: Royal Mail Ship – the ship also carried official mail.

Design: Titanic was one of the three Olympic-class ships of the White Star Line, along with the Olympic and the Britannic.

Wreck: The wreck was only discovered in 1985 at a depth of approximately 3,800 metres, more than 600 km south of Newfoundland.
