A dory is a small, open rowing boat or fishing boat with a distinctive shape and rich maritime history, particularly associated with fishing in North America and Europe.


 

What is a dory?

Origin:
The dory was developed in the 18th and 19th centuries and widely used in the Grand Banks fishery near Newfoundland. They were popular with fishermen from France, Portugal, and Canada, among others.


 

Characteristics of a dory:

Hull: Narrow, flat-bottomed and light, with steep, straight sides.

Construction material: Originally wood, later also aluminium or plastic.

Propulsion: Usually rowed, but also suitable for small outboard motors or sailing rig.

Length: Between 4 and 6 metres (13 to 20 feet).

Very stable when loaded, but rather unstable when empty.


 

Usage and applications:

Fishing boats: Used to catch cod and other fish with lines and hooks.

Tenders / dinghies: Due to their light weight and simple construction.

Recreation: Nowadays, they are also built as traditional wooden rowing boats or sailing boats.
