The South Holland milk barge is a traditional type of flat-bottomed boat that was originally used for transporting milk in the polders of South Holland. These barges were essential for farmers and market gardeners in areas with many ditches and waterways, where vehicles had difficulty reaching.
Length: Usually between 5 and 7 metres.
Bottom: Flat bottom that curves upwards at the front and rear.
Construction: Clinker-built wooden construction with two side planks.
Propulsion: Originally propelled with a long punt pole; later also with an outboard motor.
Use: Transport of milk, hay, manure and vegetables; also used for dredging work.
An example of a milk barge is the EH6, originally built in 1934 in Lemmer. This vessel was later converted into a sailing yacht and is currently available for sale. The EH6 has a length of 9.3 metres and a width of 3 metres, with a draught of 0.9 metres. The vessel is equipped with a 62 hp Solè diesel engine, built in 2008.
