A 4-oared bunboat is a traditional type of flat-bottomed boat that was originally used for transporting goods in the Dutch inland waterways. The term "bunboat" refers to an open, flat wooden boat with a slight curve, suitable for shallow waters. The number of oars (in this case, four) indicates how many rowing oars the boat has.
Construction Material: Wood, often oak or other durable wood.
Shape: Flat-bottomed with a slight curve, suitable for shallow waters.
Length: Varying, but often between 6 and 8 metres.
Use: Transport of goods such as peat, hay, manure, and other agricultural products.
Propulsion: Originally with four rowing oars; later also with an outboard motor.
The bunboat is an important part of the cultural heritage of the Netherlands. In 2018, an exhibition about the Oostzaan jollen was held in the Public Hall of Zaanstad City Hall. This exhibition, organised by the Oudheidkamer Oostzaan in collaboration with the Zaanstad Municipal Archives, offered an insight into the history of these traditional boats and their role in the local community.
