The Statendam was a passenger ship of the Dutch Holland America Line, commissioned in 1957. It was the fourth ship with this name and was originally intended for the scheduled service to New York. From 1966 to 1982, the ship was used as a cruise ship by the Holland America Line. After its sale in 1982, the ship changed names and owners several times. In 2004, it was scrapped in India.
The Statendam was a twin-screw steam turbine-powered passenger ship of the Holland America Line, built by the dock and shipyard company Wilton-Fijenoord N.V. in Schiedam. It had a length of 195.77 metres. The maximum draught was 7.92 metres. The gross tonnage was 24,294 GRT, the net tonnage 13,879.45 NRT. The engine power was 2 x 11,000 IHP. The keel was laid on 18 June 1955; the ship left the building dock on 12 June 1956. Then-Crown Princess Beatrix christened the Statendam on 23 January 1957.
The ship had 84 first-class cabins and 868 tourist-class cabins. The crew initially numbered 436 people. The ship was originally intended for the scheduled service to New York but was converted into a cruise ship in 1971. The Statendam was primarily deployed for the American market in the Caribbean. A well-known cruise was also "The Grand Pacific-Orient Cruise" from Los Angeles via the Marquesas Islands, Rarotonga, New Zealand, both sides of Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, and Hawaii back to Los Angeles.
In 1982, the ship was sold by the Holland America Line and renamed Rhapsody by the new owner. Subsequently, it was sold again in 1986 and 1996 and renamed Regent Star and Sea Harmony, respectively. Ultimately, the ship was scrapped in India in 2004.
